Hypoxic Cytotoxicity Assay
Hypoxic cytotoxicity assay measures the anticancer effects of synthetic and natural products in conditions that mimic the microenvironment of cancer. Cancer cells have altered metabolism, and most solid tumors suffer from significantly lowered oxygen concentration than in healthy tissues. Such hypoxic conditions change the response of cancer cells to drugs; therefore, assessing the anticancer effects of drugs in hypoxic conditions will reflect the real cytotoxic effect and better simulate the microenvironment of cancer.
This assay is done only via SRB staining, using hypoxic chambers (Anaero Pack, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co., Tokyo, Japan).
